Catherine Jalomo (Murphy group) successfully defended her thesis, entitled “Nanomaterials as Delivery Systems,” on May 6. She earned her degree from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Congratulations, Dr. Jalomo!

Graduate student Emma McKeel defends thesis

Emma McKeel (Klaper group) successfully defended her thesis, entitled “The Molecular, Physiological, and Morphological Impacts of Carbon Dot Surface Functionalization on Interactions with Plants and Microalgae,” on April 2. She earned her degree from the Department of Freshwater Sciences at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Congratulations, Dr. McKeel!

Caroline Anastasia (Fairbrother group) successfully defended her thesis, entitled “The Leveraging analytical tools to evaluate the behavior of nanoscale anthropogenic materials in environmental matrices,” on February 28. She earned her degree from Johns Hopkins University. Congratulations, Dr. Anastasia!

Dr. Shana Stoddard awarded Silvia Ronco Innovative Mentor Award

Dr. Stoddard, our 2023 CSN Scholar-in-Residence, was recently awarded the Silvia Ronco Innovative Mentor Award 2023. This award was stablished to recognize an investigator working with undergraduates that has had significant impact in the careers of the students. In Memory of Prof. Joel Pedersen

We are deeply saddened to share that our dear colleague, Dr. Joel Pedersen, passed away on June 30 after an 8-month battle with brain cancer. CSN Director Bob Hamers shares this remembrance of his friend: Many of you are aware of Joel’s critical role in the CSN, dating back more than 5 years before the center started. He and I started collaborating around 2003-2004 through the campus Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC); that collaboration later nucleated the broader collaboration that ultimately became the CSN.  Joel was a font of knowledge about everything in the field of environmental science and was perhaps the most well-read and smartest person I’ve ever met. Graduate Student Jaya Borgatta Defends Thesis

Jaya Borgatta successfully defended her thesis on June 22nd, 2021. She is a part of the Hamers group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The title of her thesis is “Understanding the influence of Cu-based nanoparticle properties on interactions with plant systems and disease suppression.” Jaya has accepted a postdoc position in Jason White’s group at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Congratulations, Dr. Borgatta!

We are excited to welcome Dr. Della Mosley (“Dr. Della”) to the NSF Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology as our new Wellness, Equity, and Liberation Consultant! Dr. Della is a counseling psychologist from the University of Florida and co-founder of Academics for Black Survival and Wellness (#Academics4BlackLives), and she brings a unique and powerful approach that aims to enhance wellness, equity, and liberation in the Center. Grounded in a Black queer feminist framework and critical consciousness theory, her work uses evidence-based and culturally mindful methods to bring about effective change and measurable results in the area of liberation (e.g., equity, inclusion, well-being) for marginalized folx. Dr. Raychelle Burks Serves as CSN’s First Scholar-in-Residence

The CSN is pleased to announce ​Dr. Raychelle Burks as its first-ever Scholar-in-Residence for summer 2020. Dr. Burks will focus her work on the Center’s outreach and science communication efforts, including working with the summer undergraduate research program on a social media campaign.​ In addition, Dr. Burks will share her analytical chemistry expertise and participate in the center’s summer tutorial program. She will also present a free public webinar on chemistry in pop culture on August 4 at 7:30 p.m. Central (register here).
