Congratulations to Professor Christy Haynes, Associate Director of the Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology, for becoming the new head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota. She will begin her duties on July 1st, 2023 when she will become the first woman to hold this position. Read a News Release featuring Professor Haynes here!
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Shanna Stoddard will be the CSN’s Scholar-in-Residence for summer 2023. Dr. Stoddard is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Rhodes College, and is also Director for the STEM Cohort Mentoring Program. She will participate in various activities with the center, including a Wednesday seminar about her research and mentoring, and working with both mentors and students in our Summer Undergraduate Research Experience.
We are deeply saddened to share that our dear colleague, Dr. Joel Pedersen, passed away on June 30 after an 8-month battle with brain cancer. CSN Director Bob Hamers shares this remembrance of his friend: Many of you are aware of Joel’s critical role in the CSN, dating back more than 5 years before the center started. He and I started collaborating around 2003-2004 through the campus Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC); that collaboration later nucleated the broader collaboration that ultimately became the CSN. Joel was a font of knowledge about everything in the field of environmental science and was perhaps the most well-read and smartest person I’ve ever met. He provided important and unique perspective on the center’s connections to… Read More »In Memory of Prof. Joel Pedersen
Laura Kesner defended her thesis on June 14 titled “Impact of surface properties on nanoparticle-induced phase change in phospholipid vesicles”. Congratulations Dr. Kesner!
Paige Kinsley defended her thesis, entitled “Carbon Coatings as a Tool for Controlling Surface Chemistry of Materials” on May 31, 2022. Paige has accepted a position as Education Outreach Lead for the Argonne Leadership Computational Facility at Argonne National Labs. Congratulations, Dr. Kinsley!
Press release on CSN research: Nanoparticles may have bigger impact on the environment than previously thought
The University of Minnesota has published a press release describing the recent CSN article, “Chronic exposure to complex metal oxide nanoparticles elicits rapid resistance in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.” The study, co-authored by graduate student Stephanie Mitchell, Professor Erin Carlson, and twelve other researchers across four groups in the Center, was published in August in the journal Chemical Science. The story has been picked up by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Phys.org, Newswise, and the National Science Foundation website.
