Two CSN Undergraduates Win Research Awards

Kyle Johnson and Katie Landy, CSN undergraduates working in the lab of Dr. Christy Haynes, have both been chosen to receive the University of Minnesota’s 2017 David A. and Merece H. Johnson Scholarship for outstanding achievement in undergraduate research as well as overall scholastic excellence. Congratulations to Kyle and Katie!

Humboldt Foundation Awards Franz Geiger 2017 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize

The Humboldt Foundation has awarded CSN faculty member Franz Geiger the 2017 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize, which is named after the famous 18th century mathematician and astronomer. The award allows Franz to work on interfacial charge density problems relevant to the CSN. Congratulations, Franz!

Director Bob Hamers Featured in Associated Press

CSN Director Bob Hamers was featured in an Associated Press story where the reporter tagged along to see a “typical” day in the life of a faculty member. The AP story ended up being picked up by several major news sources, including the New York Times, the Washington Times, and the Daily Mail (making it an international story!).  

Three CSN Students Recognized in 2017 Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The CSN is proud to announce that  two graduate students, Liz Laudadio and Natalie Hudson-Smith, have been awarded Graduate Research Fellowships from the National Science Foundation. A third, Nicholas Niemuth, was recognized as an honorable mention. As the program website states, “The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.” Congratulations to Natalie, Liz, and Nicholas!

ScienceSeeker Selects Two Sustainable Nano Blog Posts as Editor’s Picks

Two recent Sustainable Nano blog posts have been recognized as ScienceSeeker Editor’s Selections. First, graduate student Margy Robinson’s post, How Do Skis Ski, and How Do Nanomaterials Make Skiing More Fun? was listed for the week of February 20-26. Next, Professor Christy Haynes’ post in honor of International Women’s Day, What is the “Matilda Effect,” and How Can We Improve Recognition of Women Scientists? was chosen for the week of March 6-12. Congratulations to Margy and Christy!

Prof. Cathy Murphy Named Fellow of Materials Research Society

CSN faculty member Cathy Murphy, a Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been named a 2017 Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS). Dr. Murphy was chosen “For pioneering work on the synthesis of plasmonic metal nanostructures and investigation of their effects on biological systems.” Congratulations, Cathy!
