Professor Cathy Murphy of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was recognized in the recent “Women in Nanotechnology” virtual issue of the journal ACS Nano. The description of the issue says, “Growing numbers of exciting nanoscience and nanotechnology projects led by women scientists are increasing our knowledge of fundamental physical, chemical, and biological properties of materials and applying these advances across science, engineering, and medicine. In this virtual issue, ACS Nano highlights the work of research groups led by women investigators worldwide in a celebration of their contributions to excellent science.” See the full virtual issue here.

CSN graduate student Xu (Mary) Huang recently defended her doctoral dissertation at the University of Iowa, “Extending Accurate Density Functional Modeling for the Study of Interface Reactivity and Environmental Applications.” Congratulations, Dr. Huang!

Student Donald White Receives 2nd Place Poster Award

CSN Graduate Student Donald White was selected as the winner of the 2nd Place Award in the graduate poster competition at Tuskegee University’s Seventh Joint Annual Research Symposium (JARS 2017). The poster was entitled, “A facile method dispersing CNF’s via vs1 with in a polymer matrix.” Congratulations, Donald!

Two CSN Undergraduates Win Research Awards

Kyle Johnson and Katie Landy, CSN undergraduates working in the lab of Dr. Christy Haynes, have both been chosen to receive the University of Minnesota’s 2017 David A. and Merece H. Johnson Scholarship for outstanding achievement in undergraduate research as well as overall scholastic excellence. Congratulations to Kyle and Katie!

Three CSN Students Recognized in 2017 Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The CSN is proud to announce that  two graduate students, Liz Laudadio and Natalie Hudson-Smith, have been awarded Graduate Research Fellowships from the National Science Foundation. A third, Nicholas Niemuth, was recognized as an honorable mention. As the program website states, “The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.” Congratulations to Natalie, Liz, and Nicholas!

Prof. Cathy Murphy Named Fellow of Materials Research Society

CSN faculty member Cathy Murphy, a Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been named a 2017 Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS). Dr. Murphy was chosen “For pioneering work on the synthesis of plasmonic metal nanostructures and investigation of their effects on biological systems.” Congratulations, Cathy!

Prof. Rigoberto Hernandez Wins 2017 Herty Medal

CSN faculty member Rigoberto Hernandez has won the 2017 Herty Medal, awarded by the Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Hernandez was honored “for transforming our view of chemical dynamics in non-equilibrium environments, his creative approaches to improving diversity within the chemistry profession, and his leadership at the local and national levels of the American Chemical Society.” Congratulations, Rigoberto!

Student Jo Machesky Receives Travel Award

Student Jo Machesky, who participated in the CSN’s Research Experience for Undergraduates program last summer, has received a Conference Travel Grant from Northwestern University to attend the American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco this April. The title of Jo’s presentation is “Alteration of Membrane Compositional Asymmetry by LiCoO2 Nanosheets.” Congratulations, Jo!
